Emergency dentistry refers to any type of urgent dental need that must be handled immediately. Examples include a dislodged tooth, a broken tooth, a severe toothache, or a dental trauma of some kind. When emergencies are addressed as soon as possible, it increases the chances of saving a tooth or preventing a more serious problem.

A dislodged tooth can often be saved if it is handled immediately. If possible, put the tooth back into the socket and bite down on some clean gauze to hold it in place. If you can’t get it back in, put the tooth in a cup of milk or saliva to bring with you to the dentist. For a broken tooth, save the piece or pieces of the tooth if possible in milk or saliva and bring them to our office. 

For a severe toothache, over-the-counter pain medication can help to relieve your pain until we can provide treatment. The tooth may be infected and require a root canal procedure. 

For any other mouth injury, apply pressure to stop the bleeding until you are able to receive treatment. If bleeding is uncontrollable or the situation escalates, call 911 or proceed to the emergency room.
